A very promising new application has been developed with BioCAT granules for arsenic removal. An industrial wastewater contaminated with > 2.000 µg/L of a complex arsenic pollution has been treated in a simulated flow-through reactor in our laboratories, resulting in arsenic removal efficacies of up to 97 % after only a few hours of hydraulic residence time. This means that BioCAT, next to reductive removal of many AOX compounds, also has potential in reductive treatment of complex inorganic waste streams containing heavy metals and metalloids such as arsenic. Cost-saving granular bed applications based on BioCAT media look very promising, and first results indicate that the need for (frequent) replacements of costly reactants and ion exchange resins could be much limited through our technology.
